Olympus E-3 Digital SLR Review

Review Summary
Review (Summary): "The Olympus E-3 can best be classified as a digital dreadnought. At over two pounds (32.5 ounces) without a lens and over three pounds with one (53.2 ounces), this isn't a camera to be taken lightly. It is nicely balanced, however, which makes toting it around in the field less onerous than might be expected. ...

The Olympus E-3 takes outstanding photographs indoors as well as out. Its exposure system does an excellent job of analyzing the lighting in a scene and producing arresting photographs. On most occasions, I found the 12-60mm telephoto lens (24-120mm approximate equivalent) very versatile in nabbing the shot that I wanted when I wanted it. ..."

Review (Summary): "... the E-3 is a totally new camera that has obviously been designed to go head-to-head with the likes of Nikon's D300 and Canon's 40D at the very top of the market, at the point where the distinctions between 'high end enthusiast', 'semi professional' and 'professional' get very blurred ...

... If you've taken the trouble to read every page of this review you'll already have a good idea where this conclusion is likely to go. To start with there's no doubt that the E-3 is, without a shadow of a doubt the best Four-Thirds camera ever made and a more than worthy (if a little tardy) successor to the original E-1. It offers users of Olympus 'mid range' SLRs an affordable way to upgrade to a faster, even more customizable camera with a pro-grade weatherproof body and a significantly bigger, brighter viewfinder. ..."

Review (Summary): "The E-3 ($1699) is the flagship camera in Olympus' digital SLR lineup. It is the long-awaited follow-up to the E-1, which was introduced way back in 2001 (back when our reviews were in purple). Olympus didn't just slap a new badge on the E-1 and call it the E-3 - this camera is new from the ground up. ...

... hough not without a few flaws, the E-3 produced very good quality photos. They were colorful, and full of detail. Some may consider the photos slightly soft (as is the case with most midrange SLRs), but fixing that is easy enough. ..."

Review (Summary): "My first acquaintance with the Olympus E-3 is positive. The expectations were quite high, also because it concerned a successor of the Olympus E-1 that already proved itself in practice. The E-1 may be looked upon as a semi-pro DSLR camera but got surpassed from all sides in the last few years. The one thing that remained through the years is its reliability and its solidness, features that are of indescribable value to a photographer. The Olympus E-3 still has to prove itself in practice and looking at its housing of magnesium alloy and the dust- and waterproof features of the camera we may expect at least the minimum of solidness. ...

During the Olympus E-3 event I was able to work with the camera for an entire day and I must admit that I was nicely surprised. Not that I did not have faith in the long development period necessary to build a new D-SLR camera but more so because Olympus once again have presented a full D-SLR with its very own character. The competition is heavy and ruthless and the technique advances with big steps. The Olympus E-3 seems to fit in perfectly in the current D-SLR market but it is capable of keeping its own identity. ..."

Review (Summary): "... The E-3 boasts the world's fastest auto-focusing speeds when used in conjunction with the new Supersonic Wave Drive lenses, one of which we test out in our review (the 12-60mm SWD lens). Fast shutter speeds of up to 1/8000th second and 5fps continuous shooting with a 19 image RAW buffer ensure that you'll never miss a shot. A 10 megapixel Live MOS sensor, built-in image stabilizer which stabilizes all lenses, Live View on a multi-angle 2.5 inch LCD screen and the Supersonic Wave Filter dust reduction system complete the headline specs. ...

... I was initially - yet pleasantly - surprised at how warm and well-saturated images are straight out of the E-3 when left to its 'natural' default settings; that is to say skin tones looking healthy rather than Judith Chalmers/Donald Trump orange. When using the E-410 and E-510 DSLRs I often switched to the in-camera vivid setting, as the default seemed to lack the punch of the scene before me - but didn't feel the need of it here. ..."

Hands-on Preview (Summary): "Olympus has finally announced their long-awaited flagship DSLR camera, the E-3. Billed as a pure pro camera, the Olympus E-3 is really more comparable to the cameras by Olympus's competitors that we've been categorizing as semi-pro, such as the Pentax K10D, Canon 40D, and Nikon D200. Whatever you call it though, there's no question that the new E-3 represents a sizable leap forward in technology and sophistication for the Olympus SLR line. ...

... The Olympus E-3 is by far the most advanced Olympus digital camera I've used, very satisfying to shoot with, and one of the more compelling SLRs launched this season. Its design, though big, is ergonomically pleasing and handsome, and it gives you a feel of confidence and control. The E-3's build matches the sturdy feel of Olympus's high-end lenses, which are some of the tightest we've seen."

Review (Summary): "It's taken Olympus over 4 years to update its professional model the E-1 and release the E-3, which is a long time in digital camera terms. Although Olympus and Panasonic were the pioneers of Live View systems, the feature is now almost a standard fixture, even on pro models, so there's no surprise to see the same system here. What is quite surprising is Olympus' decision to only go with 10MP on the E-3, especially considering other manufacturers recent reliance on higher pixel counts at this price point (and below). ...

What the Olympus E3 brings to the table is excellent images, a great build quality, and a lovely user experience, but fails to match the innovation of the E-1, or even other models from the Olympus range. Instead it's taken the best bits, refined them and put them all into a very usable camera. ..."
